SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Theme
Women of Chicago's stockyards, any style, any interpretation
Submissions Due 9/1/2009

The Contest

50 scenes (scripts) will be chosen to compete in a public reading.
The top 10 scripts will be selected based on audience responses, and will be announced in Fall 2009. These top 10 will receive a full staged reading in Fall 2009.

Based on audience responses,4 Winners will be selected and workshopped, then produced in March 2010 in Chicago, in honor of Women's History Month.

What to Submit
One act plays (10-20 minutes total running time), about the women of the Chicago stockyards, any style, any interpretation
The protagonist or antagonist (or both) must be female
Also attach or mark what you consider the best five pages, ones that you feel could be pulled out and be a proper representation of the work

Acceptable Submissions:
Plays that have had previous readings or workshops
Plays that have never been produced

Submissions We Do Not Accept:
Plays that have been previously produced
Children's plays
Foreign language plays
Strong dance movement plays
Plays with graphic portrayal of violence of any kind against children
Casting with more than six (6) actors

To submit your play to the Stockyards Women's Histories Contest please provide the following:
  1. Complete copy of the script.
  2. Attach or mark your best scene or dialogue samples from your script.
    Each scene should be no more than 5 pages long in standard 12 pt font size, 8.5" x 11" page format, with pages numbered. Choose the scene that you feel best represent your talent, your passion, your gift. This scene will be used to compete in the first round of the contest.
  3. Synopsis of the play (1/2 page maximum)
    Briefly describe your play's story in no more than ½ a page. Your synopsis will be read aloud to the acting ensemble, so be concise.

  4. Character breakdown for the whole play
    Include the number of men and women, along with age breakdown. Include any other relevant character details. Be sure to note any special casting needs.

  5. Running time (estimated) for the whole play.
    Our ideal running time is approximately 10-20 minutes with no intermission. Submissions must be within this time or they will not be considered.

  6. Brief description of yourself as an artist / playwright and your resume should answer the following:
    • Have you been produced as a playwright before? If yes, please give details: what was produced, and when and where it was produced.
    • If your plays have been produced, have they been reviewed? If yes, please include copies of your reviews.
    • What is your perspective on revisions?
    • Previous workshop/ reading history for your submission.

  7. Include all available methods of contact including email on your title page (address, phone/cell/pager number, email address).
